JP Howlett

I'm a software engineer and systems architect with more than 30 years in the field. My tech career started in hardware: security camera systems, whole-home audio, TVs, home and business networks. Outside tech I've worked as a welder and a carpenter. I still like things that are built to hold.

My edge is platform-agnostic data engineering, not fluency in any one tool. Data in, transform, data out. I've learned new tools on the fly under real deadlines more than once, including teaching myself Power BI while training someone else on it, and fixing a failing production script in a language I'd never used.

One of my proudest pre-AI wins was for FastBolt, a federal contractor. I built a pipeline that parsed multi-section CSV reports, fixed inconsistent date formats, and pushed clean data into an ERP I'd never touched. A week of manual work became about a minute. The new owner later called me back for a change request because the tool was still outperforming its replacement.

Before this I spent about three years on a project built on extreme security and cryptography. I can't say much more about it.

I am the author of IETF draft draft-howlett-aigcsep-00 and founder of The Covenant.
